The Ford Transit is one of the most popular commercial vans in North America. Its success is mainly due to its numerous configurations, as well as its mechanical versatility. As you probably know, the American manufacturer's van has been offered in a 100% electric version for three years now.
Unfortunately, this electric version has never been truly competitive due to its limited range. Let's just say that 203 kilometers of range on a full charge is insufficient for a vehicle that typically needs to spend an entire day on the road. In short, the brand's engineers have listened to customer feedback, which is why the range has been slightly increased for 2024.
Slightly Better
Thanks to a new 89 kWh battery, the Ford E-Transit now offers a range of 254 kilometers, which is 51 kilometers more than before. It is worth mentioning that these figures refer specifically to the low-roof version. The American manufacturer's van boasts a power output of 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.
Despite this increase, the Ford E-Transit still falls somewhat short compared to the competition. Indeed, looking at General Motors with the Zevo 600, there is talk of a range of 400 kilometers. On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offers a range of 370 kilometers. The gap has been narrowed, especially with the RAM ProMaster EV, which offers a range of 261 kilometers.
Faster Charging
The brand's engineers not only increased the E-Transit's range, but it also benefits from two new onboard chargers for 2024. It can now regain 107 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes at a fast-charging station, which is already more appealing. As for normal charging at 80 A, a full charge from 0 can be achieved in just over six hours, which is very fast.
According to the American manufacturer, the majority of commercial vans cover an average of 120 kilometers per day. Therefore, the E-Transit's 254 kilometers of range should be more than sufficient. Moreover, being able to charge them overnight when they return to the warehouse makes it even more efficient. It's certainly not suitable for all entrepreneurs, but the Ford E-Transit remains an excellent vehicle that all business owners should consider.
